Quick & Dirty theory on mcwolles' "Waterfall"

mcwolles made an amazing 3d working representation of M.C. Escher's "Waterfall" :

    I'm guessing there's some CG involved. Also, it would probably be possible to figure out more about the physical structure based on how his shadows get cast.
