Abandoned House in Covington

Image
On my way home from Covington, GA a few weeks ago I noticed what appeared to be a group of abandoned structures in the woods off the side of the road. Next time, armed with my camera, I decided to head that direction to see what was there. Turns out it's an abandoned house. It looks like it was built sometime in the early 20th century; there is no central heat and the main bedrooms and living area are built around a group of small corner fireplaces. There is a fuse panel in the kitchen, and the couple of rooms that have light switches added on have the old round push-button toggle switches. The outer walls of the house are all stone, save for a small wood addition in the back.

Atlanta Palms Hotel / Downtown Ramada

Image
Hey look, an empty hotel building. I wonder what they're doing in there? Ah... Asbestos removal. How lovely! Anyhow, here's some pictures. Edit: 2007.07.21- Holy Crap - this place used to be the Clarion Hotel!  I thought I recognized that interior courtyard! A friend and I attended SummerCon X there in July of 1995!  :)  In fact, it was in the top-level conference room that is now the barren interior shown in photo #8 below.

Tiptoe Through The Thunderstorms

Image
Saturday, mid-day; forecast for metro Atlanta - "40% of early thunderstorms." 1:30 pm: I check the local METAR and radar, and everything is better than forecast. Some puffy clouds and a few building cumulus around 5500 feet, no echoes. I need to go to Aircraft Spruce at Falcon Field (FFC) to buy oil, an oil filter, and a new rudder NAV position light, so I pack my stuff in my car and head out to Covington. Dennis, another local pilot who I often see hanging around the airport, offers to ride with me. On top of being a generally nice guy he's both more experienced and has more ratings than me, so it's always a pleasure to have him along. We depart into a gentle 5 knot wind under building (but not menacing) cumulus clouds with a planned stop at Tara Field (4A7) for gas. (I hadn't refueled after flying back from Clearwater, FL recently because it was late and I was tired.) We encounter some light rain en route, but visibility is decent in the rain and even bett...

Pullman at Night

Image
It was a dark and stormy night... No really, it was! But that didn't stop me from taking along nonfucious to see what the Pullman Railroad Car site looked like in the dark. (What, you didn't think I'd go in that creepy place at night alone, do you?) The ambiance was amazing- rain against the metal roofing, accented by occasional lightening flashes or distant rolling thunder. Seeing the heavy machinery, oversized chains, and concrete textures illuminated only by flickering florescent lights or the occasional stray incandescent made the entire place look like something from a Nine Inch Nails video. I didn't take enough pictures. I think I was too busy being enveloped by the place. Nonfucious drew light patterns with the flashlight during some of the exposures for an interesting effect.
