A few years ago, a friend reached out with a question: Her daughter was studying cyber-security and software development at a university, and she wanted to know my take on Information Security as a career field. So I sat down and wrote up the following summary. I think it's largely still accurate, and I've been asked for it again, so I figured I should just post it somewhere I can link to it.
